  L'Anse Warden Electric Company, LLC

L’Anse Warden Electric Company, LLC (LWEC), located in L’Anse, Michigan, a subsidiary of Traxys North America, LLC, is the owner and operator of a 20 MW (17.7 MW net) biomass-fueled electric plant, which went into commercial operation in late 2009.

LWEC converted the former J.H. Warden Generating Station, which was a coal, oil and natural gas-fired station, into a biomass facility, which allows the plant to utilize one of Michiganís most plentiful renewable resources. The fuels used to generate electricity include the following:
• Forest Products – woodchips, bark and fines
• Papermill Wood Residues
• Railroad Ties
• Tire Chips

LWEC is a Midwest Independent Transmission System Operator (MISO) market participant and is connected to the regional transmission system on–site. In addition to providing renewable energy for Michigan’s economy, the biomass plant utilized papermill waste from a nearby mill as part of its fuel input, and provides steam and electricity to a local manufacturer located in L’Anse, Michigan.

The Renewable Energy Credits and capacity and energy generated are sold to a Michigan–based utility company as part of a long–term power purchase agreement. LWEC also has full FERC authority to create market–based rates.
